Great Platte River Road Archway Monument

In 1997, Governor Frank Morrison challenged the leaders of Nebraska to develop a monument that recognized the significance of the state’s many pioneer trails and the Great Platte River Road, which later became the route of the Pony Express, the first telegraph line, the first trans-continental railroad, the first continental interstate, and at the dawn of the 21st century, the fiber-optic highway.

The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is both a gateway to the West/East and as a living monument through which the visitor can experience the history of westward expansion. The imposing log structure spans Interstate 80 near Kearney, rising eight-stories above the Nebraska prairie.

Visitors to the Archway relive the Grand Adventure through a series of entertaining exhibits, interactive displays and activities, giving them a clearer understanding of how America came to be.
